Construction of Nelson’s Column

This picture was taken in April 1844 by Henry Fox Talbot and shows Nelson’s Column under construction in Trafalgar Square, London. It is currently featured in the British Library’s excellent “Points of View” exhibition.

There appear to be no people or horses in the pictures. This is because the exposure required was too long to record the movements of the crowded streets. Also notice that the famous lions which guard the column are not there - they were not added for another 34 years.
