The ADA diet is an abbreviation for the American Dietetic Association diet. It is important to be aware that the ADA diet follows the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and it is not about dropping pounds as quickly as possible but instead is concerned with developing healthy eating habits that you can realistically live with each and every day. The ADA diet is a diet plan that is low in fat and encourages getting most of the necessary calories from proteins and fruits and vegetables while frowning down on too many carbohydrates and refined sugars. The ADA diet is all about balance and nutritional eating.
The ADA diet is broken down into different phases, each based on how many calories are permitted to be consumed on a daily basis. There is the 1000 calorie ADA diet, the 1200 calorie ADA diet, the 1500 calorie ADA diet, the 1600 calorie ADA diet, the 1800 calorie ADA diet and the 2000 calorie ADA diet.
The ADA diet is broken down further into subsections such as the 1500 calorie vegetarian ADA exchange diet and the ADA low carbohydrate diet. The ADA diet is particularly good for those who have diabetes. There is the 6 meal 1200 calorie ADA diabetic diet, the 1800 ADA diabetic diet and the diabetic 2000 ADA diet.
The ADA diet stipulates what foods as well as what portions of foods can be eaten at meal times including breakfast, lunch and dinner and it also stipulates desserts and snacks that are allowed. Snacking while dieting? It is not a punishable sin while dieting. In fact sometimes it is beneficial as it helps prevent eating too much at supper. The important thing is to choose snacks that are less than 150 calories. Some examples that be acceptable on a 2000 calorie ADA diet or a 1500 ADA diet include one-ounce fat-free potato chips, eight baked tortilla chips with two teaspoon of salsa or two fig cookies. If you want to consume even less calories at snack time, if you are on the ADA low carbohydrate diet then choose ½ cantaloupe, a banana or an apple, ¾ cup of prepared sugar-free hot chocolate or ½ cup of sparkling water or seltzer mixed with ½ cup of cranberry juice.
