The Cabbage soup diet has been around since World War 1 when the military used a form of this diet to make sure they had enough Vitamin C in their systems to prevent the onset of scurvy. It has been called the Model’s Diet and the TWA Stewardess Diet since models and stewardesses will use this diet in order to keep their weight down. As you may recall, in the 1950’s flight attendants had to maintain a certain weight profile in order to keep their jobs.

Your Basic Cabbage Soup Recipe
- Vegetables such as onions and tomatoes, celery and peppers
- Tomato Juice
- Soup Bouillon
- Spices, such as basil, black pepper, and garlic to improve the taste.
Place all the ingredients in a pot, add some water, bring to boil and let simmer until done.
The Cabbage Soup Diet Plan
- Day 1: Have cabbage soup throughout the day along with any fruit (except bananas). You may drink tea, black coffee, cranberry juice or water.
- Day 2: Cabbage Soup, and low calorie vegetables (excluding beans, peas, or corn) and a baked potato with butter.
- Day 3: Cabbage Soup with vegetables and fruits.
- Day 4: Cabbage soup, bananas (not more than 8) and two glasses of skim milk.
- Day 5: Cabbage soup, no more than 20 ounces of beef, chicken or fish, 6 tomatoes, and at least 6-8 glasses of water.
- Day 6: Cabbage soup, 3 beef steaks and vegetables.
- Day 7: Cabbage soup, two cups of brown rice, fruit juice, and vegetables.
Each day, you can have an unlimited amount of cabbage soup. Sugar, soda, bread or alcohol is not allowed on the diet. Day three permits bananas in order to curb your sweet tooth. Tips to make this diet work:
If you feel yourself getting hungry, well, eat more cabbage soup. Drink at least 4 glasses of water every day, and, since this diet is restrictive in nutrients, it would be advisable to take a daily multivitamin. Lastly, if you want to lose the weight, keep to the diet and don’t cheat!
Warning: Only do this diet for 7 days. It could be dangerous to stay on it for longer periods of time.

Well, if you live long enough you get to see everything. This began when a woman who was working in the preparation of military ready to eat meals, tried dehydrating the cabbage soup mixture so that all you had to do was to add some hot water and were able to get all the benefits of the cabbage soup on the spot. A manufacturer took this concept one step further and began placing the powder into pills to make dieting even easier. These cabbage soup diet pills claimed to speed up weight loss, melt fat, curb the appetite, detoxify, and even cure depression, increase immunity, and help prevent cancer.

A major complaint people have about diets is in the time it takes to prepare, and the difficulty in stocking the kitchen with the necessary foods to sustain the diet. Not so with the cabbage soup diet. This detox diet is low in calories, and is easy to prepare. Beware! As you detox, you may experience such side effects such as dizziness, lightheadedness and intestinal gas. Another precaution is that since most of the weight lost in this one week, as is the case with many weight loss diets, is in the body’s water content. (Not the fat.) The claims that the cabbage soup pills can aid in depression, build immunity and prevent cancer have not been established. I also question the amount of nutrients that are left in the cabbage after being made into soup. As we know, cooking depletes the vitamin content, so be sure to take a multivitamin complex if you decide to go on this diet, and once again, do not do this diet more than for 1 seven day cycle in three months. Detoxifying is usually safe for short periods of time, but can become life threatening if sustained beyond the recommended time period. It’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before taking on this or any detox regiment.
