Hollywood has always had a strong hold on peoples lifestyles. Celebrity Diets is no different. We all tend to think that the celebrities know something that we don’t, and so we tend to follow in their ways; whether in politics, dress, and weight loss. It is important to give some thought to their diets, and even though they may be successful in losing weight fast, are they sacrificing their health for their “beauty”?
Hollywood Stars Tend Towards Fad Diets
There are many diets recommended by celebrities, but they all seem to have some common denominators. They tend to be low in carbs, and high in protein. They also tend to be low in calories. Some celebrity diets will offer gimmicks, such as eating a grapefruit at every meal to help break down fat, or incorporating the apple cider vinegar pills to help break down the fat. As is the case with most diets, there are pros and cons to these diets and it becomes important to ‘take the good and throw out the bad’. The main problem with the Celebrity Diets is that they are too extreme, causing fast weight loss. When you lose weight too fast, you tend to starve yourself creating a negative effect on your metabolism.
Famous Celebrity Diets:
- The Master Cleanse: is an extreme detoxification consisting of drinking a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup (grade AA) with a pinch of cayenne pepper. On this cleanse, you don’t eat anything, but you can drink as much of this ‘elixir’ as you like. This can help you lose weight in a hurry, but as soon as you start eating, the weight will tend to come right back. I recommend using this drink when you want to detox for a few days, however the developer of the diet recommends staying on it for at least one eek to a few months. Be careful!
- Martha’s Vineyard Diet This diet is very popular amongst celebrities. It promises that you’ll lose 21 lbs. In 21 days through systemic detoxification. You can either go on a two day plan, a 7 day tune-up, or the full 21 day detox. The diet is the same for each level you choose, only you do it for more days leading to greater detoxification.
8:30: Anti-oxidant berry drink, herbal cleansing formula, a cup of hot herbal tea and 8 oz. Of distilled water. 10:30: 8 oz. Water, 8 oz. Hot or iced herbal tea. 12:30: One cup of fresh vegetable juice (made from a juicer), 8 oz. Water, herbal cleansing formula, and an enzyme supplement. 2:30: 8 oz. Water, 8 oz. Hot or iced herbal tea. 4:30: Either anti-oxidant or berry drink 6:00: One cup of homemade cleansing soup, one cup broth, one cup herbal tea, herbal cleansing formula, 8 oz water, and an enzyme supplement. Dieters are encouraged to exercise one mile a day, or trampoline for 20 minutes. If you are on the 21 day diet plan, it is recommended to take one colonic and one coffee enema. If you are on the shorter version of the diet, it is recommended to take one coffee enema. On the positive side, this diet can produce a very powerful detoxifation. Be careful not to overdo it, and if you have any health issues, consult your doctor before going on any detoxification so that you can be properly monitored. Preparing the drinks and juices can be time consuming, alcohol is not permitted, it can be difficult getting the colonics, and since the diet is very strict, your lifestyle must allow it.
- The Grapefruit Diet: This diet has been one of the most popular celebrity diets since the 1930’s. It is based on the premise that there is a nutrient in grapefruit that when eaten with protein can produce rapid weight loss.
Breakfast:2 Eggs, black coffee and ½ grapefruit or 8 oz grapefruit juice (unsweetened or fresh squeezed) Lunch: salad with dressing, unlimited meat, and ½ grapefruit or 8 oz grapefruit juice Supper: Red or green vegetables (non starchy), salad, unlimited meat or fish, and ½ grapefruit or 8 oz grapefruit juice. Bedtime snack: 8 oz skim milk. On this diet you must drink 64 oz water per day, you can have butter, and salad dressing, and snacking is allowed only after dinner, but only the allowed foods are permitted. This diet promises a 10 lb weight loss in 12 days, and if you want to stay on it longer, you must take a break for 2 days and you can go back on it again.
This diet seems like a pre-curser to the Atkins Diet, since it is a high protein-low carb diet. It is also a low calorie diet which adds to the success in rapid weight loss. Even though no one has shown what the advantage to grapefruit is in losing weight, (besides being a healthy, low glycemic, high fiber, high anti-oxidant fruit), it may reduce insulin levels and help balance your cravings. A study done in Israel on people eating one pink grapefruit a day showed a significant lowering of the cholesterol within 1 month. Another study done by the Florida Department of Citrus, found that by eating ½ a grapefruit with meals resulted in an average weight loss of 3 lbs. In 12 weeks. Other celebrity diets include the Cabbage Soup Diet, (similar to the Martha’s Vineyard Diet, Meal Replacement Diet (utilizing protein shakes for the meal replacement) and these Hollywood Stars will often pop various types of pills to jumpstart their program. Needless to say, if you want to lose weight fast, there are some positive benefits to some of the celebrity diets, but use your own discretion, because rapid weight loss can be dangerous to you health.
