Irwin Maxwell Stillman created a high protein, low fat and carbohydrate diet called the Stillman diet. Below are the Pros and Cons of the diet and what it is all about. The Stillman diet makes you consume a lot of meat and that makes it very attractive to guys. In this diet the main source of food that you are going to consume consist of lean beef, veal, turkey, chicken and fish. There are only a few ways for you to prepare them, which are to roast, broil, boil and smoke them. You can spice up the cooking with Tabasco sauce, pepper, herbs and salt, but no oil, butter, margarine and dressings. Last but not least are eggs, which can be hard-boiled, poached, fried and dairy product like cottage cheese, farmer cheese and pot cheese made from skim milk.
The diet also requires you to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day and you may drink tea, coffee and other drinks that does not contain calories. You are not required to eat vegetables and fruits in this diet so it is attractive to those who do not like either of them. The diet also does not require you to count calories so it helps those of us who do not have the time and energy to count. Our body does not store protein so the diet allows you to consume large amount of it. This diet may seem attractive so far, but the Cons of this diet are a real deal breaker and it would make you think twice about buying this diet.
It has a very short food list that contains little to none dairy products and the restriction placed on vegetables and a fruit is very bad for health, as it would cause dehydration, constipation and some deficiency in our body. This diet also has restrictions on oils, butter and margarine, leaving you with very little ways to cook your food and that makes it very difficult for people who are short on time to cook.
You would consume large amount of protein in this diet and that would be bad for your body because it promotes high cholesterol and stresses the kidneys, as it is required to filter the nitrogen in protein, that are harmful to the body. When the kidneys are overworked, they would be in disorder and may lead to kidney failure. The saturated fats in meat could also lead to heart disease and stroke.
The body is not able to store excess protein, so excess is converted into glucose by the liver and either used up as energy or stored as fat, which stress the liver and would cause liver damage in the long run. With all this side effects I feel that this diet is not suitable to be used in the long run. What we want is to be healthy and look good and that would require us to have a balance diet.
